INTEGRATING RICE PRODUCTION TO RESIDENTIAL BUILDING IN INDONESIA BY AMELIA AUSSIE, MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE THESIS

Being the fourth most populous country in the world, Indonesia is the third largest rice producer in the world but still struggle to meet its own rice demand. Beside food insecurity, most people in Indonesia lives in the city resulting in huge energy is being consumed every day in large quantity to transport foods from the rural area to the city which also contribute to congestion and pollution. Thus, this thesis is trying to find possible alternative to solve food insecurity, food miles, and other related problems in Indonesia by integrating rice production to residential buildings. Different methods of urban farming, different housing typologies in Indonesia, growing and processing rice methods are explained. Rice consumption in each Indonesian household is also calculated. Three existing housings were designed to show how rice production can be implemented while still fulfilling the minimum living area in Indonesia.
